A Wart's Story
Natural Health Blog By Melissa Bennett on 4/21/2008 9:22 PM
When one thinks of warts they usually visualize a beautiful princess kissing a wart ridden frog. But all is not as it appears...occasionally the Princess is the one infected with those pesky warts.   Where they appear typically depends on what type of wart is raising its ugly head. Warts are non-cancerous skin growths that are caused by a virus (HPV or Human Papillomavirus) that inhabits the top layer of the skin. The virus can invade your skin through small cuts and breaks. This is one of the reasons your Mom told you to always wear your shoes outside. Children, teens, and people with allergies or weakened immune systems are more vulnerable to the wart virus. Each person’s immune system responds to warts differently, meaning not everyone who comes in contact with HPV will develop warts.

Natural Solutions to help you Sleep
Natural Health Blog By Melissa Bennett on 4/11/2008 9:35 PM
Dear Jim,
I am sorry to hear that you are not sleeping throughout the night. Without enough restful sleep, you may feel like your dragging through the day. You can also become less sharp mentally, less productive, and more vulnerable—both emotionally and physically. Over time, insufficient sleep can impact your immune function and make you feel tired. If your immune system is compromised over time you may find yourself catching colds more often or just feeling like the “little train that couldn’t”. In any event, it is good to follow up with your medical doctor to see if there is an underlying condition which could causing your sleep disturbance. There are many natural solutions to choose from for sleep deprivation.

Getting enough sleep is one of ...

Apple Cider Vineger and Sinus Infections
Natural Health Blog By Melissa Bennett on 3/2/2008 7:10 PM

Sinus infection, or sinusitis, is an inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages. Symptoms of a sinus infection include a headache or pressure in the eyes, cheeks, nose, or on one side of the head. Other symptoms may include nasal congestion with thick nasal secretions, cough, fever or bad breath.

Organic Apple Cider Vinegar is a popular remedy for stopping sinus infections. It is an amazing home remedy. Taken as a preventative it has an alkalizing effect on the body.   It is beneficial to take apple cider vinegar before the sinus infection occurs, which for most people is at the start of allergies, colds, flu, etc.

We have found that when apple cider vinegar is taken either as a da ...

Help with Shingles
Natural Health Blog By Melissa Bennett on 3/2/2008 7:04 PM
Dear Tracy,

I received your question regarding Shingles. The following are some complementary protocols that may help reduce symptoms of this extremely painful condition.

Passion Flower leaves have been used traditionally as a sedative. In fact, Algonquin Indians used passion flower tea to help soothe their nerves.

Passion flower supports the nervous system in a variety of ways. Many have found that it helps with relaxation of tense muscles and tension headaches.

It is widely used to promote a restful night’s sleep, known for its sedative and soothing properties, to lower blood pressure, prevent tachycardia and for insomnia.

It may be used wherever an anti-spasmodic is required, e.g. in Parkinson's disease, seizures and hysteria. Passion Flower can be very effective in nerve pai ...

Detoxification after Breast Cancer
Natural Health Blog By Melissa Bennett on 2/27/2008 8:57 AM
This past weekend I met Tonya who had just gone through a protocol of chemotherapy and radiation for breast cancer. She had a question regarding coffee enemas and the benefits of detoxification. Having gone through two years of chemotherapy and radiation myself I can tell you it is one of the most intense treatments to endure. I actually got sick in the parking lot a year after finishing my treatment which was my body’s innate reaction when placed in the same environment. I found that others had also experienced this phenomenon. The best analogy for chemotherapy is that of an atomic bomb. It wipes out everything, the bad cells as well as the good cells. If it works effectively, the good cells survive and replicate to become more good cells while the bad cells die off and hopefully never to return.  I know you may feel exhausted and it felt as though you would not make it through the last treatment but you have! So if you have been throu ...

Natural Health Blog By Melissa Bennett on 2/18/2008 12:13 AM
Today I had a wonderful meeting with Coach Woods celebrating Black History Month.
I met some incredibly nice people. Some of whom have been suffering with colds and virus’s during the winter season. The following are a couple of recommendations that have helped me get through this time of year:

This is a great recipe for heading off a cold or virus before it has time to assimilate into your system. I have found that when you first get that scratchy sensation in your throat and start feeling lethargic immediately start gargling with the following products which can be picked up at your local mom and pop health food store.

What is Oil Pulling?
Natural Health Blog By Melissa Bennett on 1/11/2008 10:21 PM

Have you tried Oil Swishing? This method of detoxification is quite inexpensive and easy to incorporate into your daily routine. This form of alternative healing is derived from Ayveredic medicine and has been practiced for thousands of years in India.
Instructions
The person rinses their mouth with approximately one tablespoon of oil (sesame and sunflower oils are the most recommended) for 15−20 minutes on an empty stomach (preferably first thing in the morning, before eating/drinking), then spits it out. This procedure is typically performed daily. The oil is put in the mouth, with chin tilted up, and slowly swished, sucked, chomped and pulled thro ...
